What is kinesiology?

Kinesiology was founded in the 60’s by Dr Goodheart, an American chiropractor. Nowadays, there are more than 70 different forms of kinesiology practiced around the world, and it is constantly evolving. Kinesiology uses muscle testing to identify body blockages and imbalances. It is a holistic approach which takes into consideration all aspects of an individual : physical, mental, chemical, emotional, electrical. Using techniques of Chinese medicine, chiropractics, energy psychology, naturopathy, kinesiology treats the person as a whole to activate the body’s natural self-healing mechanism.

How does it work?

Muscle testing involves exerting a light pressure on an arm or leg muscle, which is painless and non-invasive. If I ask you to resist my pressure, or to push against my hand, you will process this command using your prefrontal cortex, the thinking or conscious brain. But when I place a stressor on the body (touching a particular organ, asking a specific question, placing a substance to which you are intolerant, etc),  you may not be able to resist. How is that? Your ancestral brain, in charge of survival, gets the message before you can act consciously.  It bypasses the prefrontal cortex, as it is a much faster processor.  This process allows one to perceive what imbalances, blockages and issues the body may have.  A variety of bespoke treatments and techniques will then work to bring the body back to harmony or homeostasis.

How might kinesiology help me?

Kinesiology aims at getting to the root cause health problems, which are not always where the symptoms of pain or discomfort lie. A condition like IBS for example may be triggered by an emotional issue or food sensitivities. A history of frequent infection in a patient may point to underlying hormonal imbalances, which may be due to lack of certain nutrients. Structural pain in the lower back can be linked to the bowels. Or to take another example, headaches may originate from a misaligned jaw, or from a build up of toxicity, and so on. Kinesiology seeks out the cause, rather than merely treating the symptom.

What to Expect During a session?

The content of each session depends on a patient’s needs. The body likes to be balanced in priority, and when we listen to it carefully, we can follow what it requires and let it guide the session.  Some of my favourite “tools” include acupressure on neurovascular and neurolymphatic points, flower remedies, emotional stress release, sound&colour therapy.

Depending on the severity of your health condition and for how long you have had it, you can expect  improvements from the first visit, and long lasting changes after 3 to 4 sessions. Addressing more complicated conditions can take longer.  It is like peeling off the layers of an onion, to find out all the underlaying causes. These layers can be multiple, hiding one under the other, and requiring time to clear.
